The Southern Paiute

This area is home to the Southern Paiute, an Indian nation originally comprised of fifteen different bands or groups. Today, only five are federally recognized: the San Juan Southern Paiute, Kaibab Paiute Tribe, Paiute Indian Tribes of Utah, Moapa Band of Paiute Indians, and Las Vegas Paiute Tribe. The Southern Paiute homeland covered approximately 600 miles. The Southern Paiute are a Numic speaking people who self-identify as the Nungwuh/Nɨngwɨ, meaning The People. Their origin story identifies the land you are standing on as part of the sacred landscape where they were meant to be. They have lived in this area since at least 1000 A.D.
